The Registry will place F-Root Servers, which are key components of critical internet infrastructure, at its data center in Podgorica, Montenegro.

The .ME Registry today announced that it is partnering with the Internet Systems Consortium (ISC), a non-profit which provides core Open Source Internet software and Afilias Limited, a provider of Internet infrastructure services, to place F-root servers at the .ME Registry data center in Podgorica, Montenegro. The company states that these servers will provide increased resilience and performance to the DNS in Montenegro.

It explains that the F-root name server is one of the 13 root server types operated by different organizations throughout the world. These servers are key components in the critical infrastructure of the Internet. Virtually every Internet transaction, from sending an email to finding a website, begins with a Domain Names System (DNS) query. A DNS query is the method computers use to translate a human readable name such as www.isc.org to a network address that a computer can find. The root servers answer the question of where several hundred top-level domains including “COM”, “ORG”, “NET” or “ME” can be found.

“Having an F-root name server located in Podgorica provides improved response times and enhanced resiliency within the DNS infrastructure for all Internet users in Montenegro and the region,” stated Zeljko Draskovic, CTO of the .ME Registry.

ISC equips each F-root server installation with IP Anycast, a routing technique that directs data to the nearest and best destination. “ISC is extremely happy to be working with the .ME Registry in placing F-root servers in Podgorica,” said Joao Damas, ISC’s F-root Program Manager. “This effort continues with our commitment to delivering strong DNS service to the entire Internet community.”

“Afilias is pleased to participate in this effort to enhance the Internet experience in Montenegro. Now, Montenegrins can enjoy even faster Internet service as well as the 100 percent uptime guaranteed by Afilias’ advanced DNS services,” commented David Knight of Afilias.

Company will make sought-after domains, consisting of one and two characters, available to brands for mobile web sites.

dotMobi, a company behind the .mobi internet domain name for mobile phones and the dev.mobi developer forum, today announced that they will make available .mobi domain names with one and two alphanumeric characters, such as q.mobi, k9.mobi, 13.mobi or ny.mobi.

The company says that these short names are sought after by companies who to extend their brand with a brief, memorable web address. It also adds that in a recent auction of numeric domains, names such as 88.com went for as much as $325,000. The company claims that numeric domains in particular are sought after because there is no translation needed among countries, making them extremely useful for global brand recognition.

It explains that these newly available domains give brands an upper hand in supporting mobile phone users who do not want to type long URL addresses into their phone browser for viewing mobile content. Plus, these domains can be used to reinforce brand loyalty. The company further explains that as examples, universities can use their acronyms to help students find school-related mobile content. U.S. state tourism boards could use their two-digital abbreviations for reaching travelers. Publicly traded companies might use their ticker symbols as domains that allow their stockholders to find current stock worth via their mobile phones, states the company.

“One and two character domains are the most valuable – and often most expensive – domains when available,” said Trey Harvin, CEO of dotMobi. “Rather than selling these names, dotMobi is looking to provide these names to strong brands with high-quality mobile content. These short domains are highly memorable ways to reach mobile customers who are using the mobile Web in 2009 as never before. They also allow these companies to utilize dotMobi’s tools, resources, and marketing reach.”
